Guy Stroumsa - Hidden Wisdom, Esoteric Traditions and the Roots of Christian Mysticism

This book investigates the problem of esoteric traditions in early Christianity, their origin and their transformation in Patristic hermeneutics, in the West as well as in the East. It argues that these traditions eventually formed the basis of nascent Christian mysticism in Late Antiquity. These esoteric traditions do not reflect the influence of Greek Mystery religions, as has often been claimed, but rather seem to stem from the Jewish background of Christianity. They were adopted by various Gnostic teachings, a fact which helps explaining their eventual disappearance from Patristic literature. The ten chapters study each a different aspect of the problem, including the questions of Gnostic and Manichaean esotericism.

Library of New Testament Studies - Cosmology and New Testament Theology

slika

For first-century people, cosmology was a fundamental part of their worldview. Whether it was the philosopher contemplating the perfection of the heavenly orbits, the farmer searching the sky for signs of when to plant his crops, or the desert-dwelling sectarian looking for the end of the world, the cosmos held an endless fascination and occupied a prominent place in their understanding of life.

For most ancient peoples, cosmology and theology were inseparable. Thus, when the Jewish and Christian Scriptural traditions begin with the bold claim, "In the beginning God created the heavens and earth," these words make statements which are at once cosmogonic, cosmological, and theological.

Scholarship has begun only recently to investigate more fully the various cosmological and cosmogonic traditions that were current in the time of the Old and New Testaments. Much of this work, however, has focused on how OT conceptions of the world compared to other Ancient Near Eastern traditions. Much less has been done on the cosmological traditions which stand behind the views of the NT writers. Even fewer works have sought to connect cosmological views with NT theology. In light of the great importance that cosmology had in ancient peoples' worldviews and theological understanding, a thorough investigation of this neglected topic is in order.

Cosmology and New Testament Theology systematically examines the NT documents to show how cosmological language and concepts inform, interact with, and contribute to the specific theological emphases of the various NT books. In some NT books, the importance of cosmology can be easily discerned, while in others what is required is a new and close examination of key cosmological terms (e.g., heaven, earth, world, creation) with an eye to the themes and theology of the book.

Torstein Tollefsen - The Christocentric Cosmology of St Maximus the Confessor

St. Maximus the Confessor (580-662), was a major Byzantine thinker, a theologian and philosopher. He developed a philosophical theology in which the doctrine of God, creation, the cosmic order, and salvation is integrated in a unified conception of reality. Christ, the divine Logos, is the centre of the principles (the logoi ) according to which the cosmos is created, and in accordance with which it shall convert to its divine source.

Torstein Tollefsen treats Maximus' thought from a philosophical point of view, and discusses similar thought patterns in pagan Neoplatonism. The study focuses on Maximus' doctrine of creation, in which he denies the possibility of eternal coexistence of uncreated divinity and created and limited being. Tollefsen shows that by the logoi God institutes an ordered cosmos in which separate entities of different species are ontologically interrelated, with man as the centre of the created world. The book also investigates Maximus' teaching of God's activities or energies, and shows how participation in these energies is conceived according to the divine principles of the logoi. An extensive discussion of the complex topic of participation is provided.

Melchisedec Toronen - Union and Distinction in the Thought of St. Maximus the Confessor

Union and Distinction in the Thought of St Maximus the Confessor presents the writings of a key figure in Byzantine theology in the light of the themes of unity and diversity. The principle of simultaneous union and distinction forms the core of Maximus' thought, pervading every area of his theology. It can be summarized as: Things united remain distinct and without confusion in an inseparable union. As Melchisedec Toronen shows, this master theme also resonates in contemporary theological and philosophical discussions.

Sara Rappe - Reading Neoplatonism, Non-Discursive Thinking in the Texts of Plotinus, Proclus, and Damascius

Neoplatonism is a term used to designate the form of Platonic philosophy that developed in the Roman Empire from the third to the fifth century A.D. and that based itself on the corpus of Plato's dialogues. Sara Rappe's challenging and innovative study is the first book to analyze Neoplatonic texts themselves using contemporary philosophy of language. It covers the whole tradition of Neoplatonic writing from Plotinus through Proclus to Damascius. In providing the broadest available survey of Neoplatonic writing the book will appeal to classical philosophers, classicists, as well as students of religious studies.

Everett Ferguson - Inheriting Wisdom, Readings For Today From Ancient Christian Writers

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." So many contemporary issues require nuanced consideration and a sensitive response--yet human nature and spiritual need remain remarkably constant. Practical, moral, and spiritual struggles are not peculiar to modern life. Early Christian writers looked at all things through the lens of God and Christ, and Inheriting Wisdom allows us to see through their eyes and gain a sharper perspective on the concerns of the twenty-first century. Introduced, arranged, and translated by Everett Ferguson, these pragmatic quotes allow the ancient authors to speak for themselves. Organized around practical themes, the words of Tertullian, Jerome, John Chrysostom, Basil of Caesarea, Clement of Alexandria, and others offer rich fare for study or devotional reading--and provide refreshing guidance through today's real-world concerns.

Harry T. Hunt - Lives in Spirit, Precursors and Dilemmas of a Secular Western Mysticism

slika

Lives in Spirit explores the dynamic conflicts that both energized and distorted the spiritual development of key precursor figures of a contemporary secular or "this-worldly" mysticism. With its historical roots in the early Gnostics and Plotinus, this characteristically Western spirituality re-emerges with the secularization and loss of traditional religious belief of modernity. The lives, works, and direct experiences of Nietzsche, Emerson, Thoreau, Jung, Heidegger, Gurdjieff, Crowley, and contemporary feminist mysticism are considered in terms of transpersonal psychology (Almaas), the sociology of mysticism (Weber and Troeltsch), and contemporary psychoanalysis (Winnicott, Bion, Kohut). Spiritual or essential experience is seen as an inherent form of human intelligence, which while potentially and even increasingly impacted by personal dynamics and social crisis, is not reducible to them.

Andrew Hardy - Christian Mysticism Throughout Church History

A] Establish a biblical base for this definition and practice.
B] Explore the history of Christian Mysticism, significant individuals considered Christian mystics, and the approaches they used. Document your research appropriately.
C] Relate what you learn to your experience of direct spiritual encounter with God through the Holy Spirit and what the Bible teaches.

In this paper Christian Mysticism will be explored within three contexts. Firstly, a definition will be sought within the context of a biblical base for a definition, and then for its practice or application to the Christian life. Secondly, there will be an exploration of the history of Christian Mysticism since its inception within Western and Eastern Church history. It is impossible to do justice to all the individuals who have taken this journey; hence a categorisation of significant schools of thought will be attempted within the context of an applied theology of practice; with key proponents being explored within their context. Thirdly, arising from this exploration I will seek to demonstrate how this relates to my experience of direct spiritual encounter with God by the agency of the “Spirit of Jesus”.

Robin Amis - A Different Christianity, Early Christian Esotericism and Modern Thought

slika

This book presents the esoteric original core of Christianity with its concern for illuminating and healing the inner life of the individual. It is a bridge to the often difficult doctrines of the early church fathers, explaining the spiritual psychology of the fathers that underlies the current renewal of spirituality in the Greek church. This renewal, like this book, is closely linked to the understandings of the modern monks and abbots on Mount Athos. A Different Christianity is useful to the practitioner, as well as to the scholar, providing new insights into the problems of studying and following the spiritual path outside of a monastery.

Andrea Diem - The Gnostic Mystery

Abstract

Comparative studies often reveal similarities between greatly different cultures, even if those cultures are geographically separated by thousands of miles or historically distinct by thousands of years. This has been especially true in religion, where similar ideas have been propounded by tribes or clans who have on the surface no contact-historically or geographically--with one another. For the phenomenologist this kind of transcultural link or synchronicity is important because it raises the question of how religious ideas emerge and develop over time. Are religious ideas part of an innate, biological, developmental sequence which manifest over the course of human evolution? Or are religious ideas simply the product of historical transfusion, played over the course in time where one tribe touches another tribe thereby transforming concepts in a very material and socially determinable way?

Although this thesis does not answer those profound questions, it does provide a remarkable example of religious synchronicity, where two diverse spiritual traditions Gnostic and Sant--posit very similar ideas about salvation and the nature of God. In this thesis I demonstrate how Gnostic and Sant Mat ideas concerning ontology, cosmology, and soteriology are remarkably close, despite the fact that the Gnostic tradition arose in the Middle East in the first and second century C.E. and that Sant Mat emerged in North India in the 14th and 15th century. My main sources are the Nag Hammadi Library for the Gnostic tradition and the writings of Tulsi Sahib and Shiv Dayal Singh for the Sant tradition.

Mary E. Wilson - Gothic Cathedral As Theology and Literature

Keywords

Number symbolism, Sacred geometry, Light metaphysics, Divine illumination, Universal salvation

Abstract

There is a tendency in modern times for life to be divided into strictly separated categories-our music is divided into bins at the record store according to sometimes arbitrary genre distinctions, courses offered by one university department often cannot be counted towards a degree in another department, and students from middle school through college are outraged when they learn that "spelling counts" in a history paper. These distinctions, which are second nature to us even in childhood, were not as numerous or as strict in the medieval European understanding of life. Even when there were systems of division, such as the classification of scholarly subjects according to the Trivium and Quadrivium, the classifications were seen as interconnected and were meant to be studied together. I don't believe we can hope to truly understand any aspect of medieval culture if we examine these aspects in isolation according to our own categories.

My hope is to come to a greater understanding of some part of medieval culture by examining in combination two aspects of this culture that are not normally combined in modern study-sacred architecture and sacred literature. I will explore correlations in the use of sacred geometry, number symbolism, light metaphysics, and optics in Gothic cathedral architecture and sacred literature of the same period. I will also explore the evolution of cathedral architecture from the Romanesque model to the Gothic model in terms of correlations with an evolving approach to popular theology as reflected in the literature of the period.

More specifically, I will look at the use of sacred geometry and number symbolism as a central element of sacred architecture regardless of style and period and the increasing importance of light metaphysics and optics in Gothic architecture as a reflection of a changing approach to popular theology culminating in such thirteenth and fourteenth century writings as those of Robert Grosseteste, Chaucer, and Dante, particularly his Divine Comedy, which present to a popular audience a complex theology which would previously have been reserved for a clerical audience.

Corinne Ware - Saint Benedict on the Freeway, A Rule of Life for the 21st Century

slika

How can we heal the rift between our daily lives and the sacred? How can we live a life capable of hearing "the still small voice" of God while experiencing the speed and sensory overload of modern life? This book is Ware's answer to these questions. She acknowledges that others have addressed the questions. On the one hand there are books which have significant depth but speak in academic or "in-group" language and provide little help adapting these insights to everyday life. On the other hand, there are practical "how-to" exercises which assist in very particular spiritual experiences but which do not offer integrated, sustainable, life-changing patterns. St. Benedict on the Freeway fills this gap. It "translates into twenty-first century life spiritually formative practices worked out in the past, creatively adapting those disciplines to contemporary daily life."

This adaptation is the heart of Ware's book. She attempts first to draw attention to our own awareness of God. She discusses how a "Rule" functioned for Benedict's time, and how it can function for us as a liberating reminder of God instead of as another repressive and burdensome taskmaster. Ware also asks how the hours of prayer--vigils, lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers, compline--can increase our spiritual awareness even if our 'community' does not stop for prayer at designated times during the day. Also, Ware explores prayer in dimensions beyond the spoken word.

The author targets what she terms "something more"-people: those who want to grow spiritually but do not know how to do so. Typically these people go on retreats and hear inspirational speakers, but their everyday lives lack the luster of those occasional times. They go from one spiritual oasis to another, wishing for something that will sustain them in between. St. Benedict on the Freeway responds to this yearning as both a book for personal reading and a resource for small groups in the church.

St. John Climacus - The Ladder of Divine Ascent

slika

The Ladder of Divine Ascent was the most widely used handbook of the ascetic life in the ancient Greek Church. Popular among both lay and monastics, it was translated into Latin, Syriac, Arabic, Armenian, Old Slavonic, and many modern languages. It was written while the author (who received his surname from this book) was abbot of the monastery of Catherine on Mount Sinai. As reflected in the title, the ascetical life is portrayed as a ladder which each aspirant must ascend, each step being a virtue to be acquired, or a vice to be surrendered. Its thirty steps reflect the hidden life of Christ himself. This work had a fundamental influence in the particularly the Hesychastic, Jesus Prayer, or Prayer of the Heart movement. Pierre Pourrat in his History of Christian Spirituality calls John Climacus the "most important ascetical theologian of the East, at this epoch, who enjoyed a great reputation and exercised and important influence on future centuries."

Rabbi Yitzchak Luria - Apples From The Orchard (Mystical Teachings of the Arizal)

The central figure of the Kabbalah as it is studied today is Rabbi Yitzchak Luria (1534-1572), known universally as the Holy Ari (“Lion”), the acronym formed by the initials of his title, “the G-dly Rabbi Yitzchak” (Ha-Eloki Rabbeinu Yitzchak), or as the Arizal “the G-dly Rabbi Yitzchak of blessed memory” (Ha-Eloki Rabbeinu Yitzchak, zichrono livrachah).

The Arizal’s teachings cover many topics, including mystical cosmology, eschatology, reincarnation, the anatomy of the soul and the mystical significance of the commandments. This book is a collection of the Arizal’s teachings on the Torah, in which he expounds on the mystical dimension of the stories and laws in the Torah.

The Arizal never wrote a commentary on the Torah per se; in fact, he hardly wrote anything. His teachings were recorded by his disciples, principally Rabbi Chaim Vital (1543-1620). The teachings in the present anthology are culled from several of Rabbi Vital’s works, chiefly Sha’ar HaPesukim, Sefer HaLikutim, and Likutei Torah.

Among the most fascinating of the Arizal's teachings are his expositions on the Torah itself. Using the classic methods of rabbinic interpretation (with a marked emphasis on gematria), the Arizal unfolds before us a hidden dimension of the stories and laws of the Torah, showing how they reflect the inner dynamics of reality and how our knowledge and observance of the Torah is crucial to the proper functioning of creation.

In this book, the reader is offered a selection of these teachings. They are presented with interpolated explanations that clarify the original text's terse prose and a commentary that shows how these sometimes obscure teachings can be applied to everyday life.

The translations and commentary I present here were originally produced on a weekly basis and circulated via the Internet. It was thought worthwhile at this point to present them in book form, even though there still remains a sizeable amount of the Arizal’s material on the Torah to be translated. Please G-d, when this additional material is ready, we will reissue this book and include a short biography of the Arizal as well as a description of how his teachings were recorded and edited in the generations immediately following his passing.

The translation of the text of the Arizal’s teachings is accompanied by explanatory notes and charts to assist the reader in understanding the text.

Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira - Experiencing the Divine, a Practical Jewish Guide

In the early 1920's, R. Kalman Kalonymus Shapira wrote a small book entitled Bnai Mashshavah Tovah, Experiencing the Divine. (R. Kalman Kalonymus Shapira is also known as the Piaseszner rebbe and, after his collection of sermons written in the Warsaw ghetto, the Aish Kodesh.)

In this book, he presents a theory and a practice of attaining meditative closeness to God, using the emotions as a vehicle to deveikut, or God-consciousness.

Equally, he describes in detail the rules governing what might be called a spiritual therapy group that he advises spiritual seekers to organize in order to intensify their practice.

This little book, discovered in the wreckage of post-Holocaust Warsaw (where R. Shapira was murdered by the Nazis in 1942), has become recognized as a jewel of Jewish spiritual literature.

Moshe Chaim Ephraim of Sudilkov - Degel Machaneh Ephraim, Banner of the Camp of Ephraim

Rabbi Moshe Chaim Ephraim of Sudilkov was born in Medzhybizh, Poland 1748 and died there on the 17th of Iyar in 1800. He was best known as the Baal Shem Tov's grandson and for the work Degel Machaneh Ephraim.

His famous treatise, the Degel Machaneh Ephraim (Banner of the Camp of Ephraim), was published by his son, Rabbi Yacov Yechiel, in Koretz in 1810, and is one of the classic works of Hasidism. It has since been reprinted many times. The work not only contains his discourses on the weekly portion of the Torah, but also records his mystical “visions” from 1780-1786. He quotes the discourses he heard from his illustrious grandfather and from Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Vitebsk. According to Rokhel, the book was so cherished by the Hasidic community that Ephraim was also known by its abbreviated title, “Hadegel”.

Contains kabbalistic and gematric analysis of Torah portions.

Elliot R. Wolfson - The Hermeneutics of Visionary Experience and Interpretation in the Zohar

This paper analyses the processes of revelation and interpretation as they function in the classic work of medeival Jewish mysticism, the Zohar. The author points out that visionary experience ofthe divine is not only central to Zoharic theosophy, but that the act of textual study itself must be understood in the light of this phenomenon insofar as the text is nothing but the configuration of divine light. The author demonstrates that the phenomenological structure of these two modes is identical according to the Zohar. Hence, the kabbalist who interprets scripture attains the level of Moses who received the Torah at Sinai.

Moshe Idel - Ta'anug, Erotic Delights from Kabbalah to Hasidism

Describing feelings is a notoriously difficult thing to do. The problem is enhanced when those who do so use a language that is not their vernacular, and even more so when that language is part of sacred scriptures, which are understood as paradigmatic and as informing or teaching some sublime forms of experience that took place in the glorious past. Caught between the artificiality of the language and the authority of the sacred texts, the dimension of personal experience is often attenuated and sometimes even obliterated. Clichés, models, paragons, rituals, and ideals canonized in the ancient past are powerful obstacles to representing present experiences. These observations certainly apply to Jewish mystical literatures, written in their vast majority during the Middle Ages, and later, in Hebrew and Aramaic, under the strong impact of biblical and other Jewish canonical values and writings. Jewish thinkers and mystics used ancient terminology not only to express their own experiences during the Middle Ages, but also to develop complex systems of thought which emerged from the appropriation of signifi cant parts of Greek and Hellenistic philosophy, which were grafted on the canonical Jewish writings. As part of this process, among many other things they developed a variety of views regarding delight.

Moshe Idel - Transmission in Thirteenth-Century Kabbalah

The study of the transmission of elements of culture, and their role in intellectual, religious, and other cultural change, may be carried out from various angles. Two in particular provide a salutary contrast to students of culture. On the one hand, there is translatio stadii, the translation of the subject from one cultural sphere to another, one school of thought to another. In the case of religious change, elements are transferred from one religion to another and cause change so great as to generate the recognition that another religion has been produced or, in cases of lesser change, generate syncretistic phenomena. In any case, transmission is viewed abstractly, in a gross way; systems impinge on one another, interact and become transmuted.

My primary concern is to examine the importance of one type of transmission, that is, oral transmission, during the first generation of Spanish kabbalists. Kabbalah, the major form of medieval Jewish mysticism, emerged in the thirteenth century and produced a large variety of voluminous documents that can be studied in some detail.

Michael D. Swartz - The Dead Sea Scrolls and Later Jewish Magic and Mysticism

This is a 12 page article from [Dead Sea Discoveries, Vol. 8, No. 2, Qumran and Rabbinic Judaism (2001)]. The first paragraph, in conjunction with the title, serves as a fine preview of the article's central intent(s); it reads:
"Students of the Rabbinic period who study the phenomena we call magic and mysticism have good reason to appreciate the efforts of Qumran scholars over the past five decades, as their labors have yielded pal- pable results for the history of Hekhalot and magical literatures. While historians of talmudic law may have to reason by analogy on how each community faced a similar legal problem, we can point to spe- cific genres of literature found at Qumran that provide precedents for later Jewish esoteric literature. Two examples, which will be discussed below, are the well-known Angelic Liturgy and a fragment of an Aramaic magical handbook. It will be argued here that both present interesting examples of persistence and transformation."

He continues and maintains, with Gershom Scholem, that "that particular element in the Hekhalot Literature actually belonged to its very heart and this almost from its beginning."

Christopher Rowland - Open Heaven, Study of the Apocalyptic in Judaism and Early Christianity

slika

The Open Heaven offers a comprehensive discussion of Jewish apocalyptic literature and themes in the Second Temple period and in early Christianity. In it there is a sustained challenge to the widespread view that apocalypticism is a form of eschatology, and, it has been widely recognised as a significant contribution to the discussion of apcocalypticism in religion since it was first published twenty years ago. By concentrating on the revelatory character of apocalyptic texts rather than their diverse contents the author suggests that it is this aspect of the literature which best enables us to understand their distinctive religion. The book offers a sustained argument for the view that apocalyptic literature is primarily about the disclosure of heavenly wisdom which offers recipients an understanding of life in the present. He also suggests that there may be some evidence to support the view that apocalypses include reports of visionary experience. The approach to apocalypticism in early Christianity stresses the importance of the visionary element as a decisive element in the history of Christan origins.

Rabbi Bahya Ben Joseph Ibn Paquda - Duties of the Heart

This is a summarised version of the complete work. The work in full was divided into 10 chapters, each representing a "gate", or a specific Sufi virtue that Ibn Paquda explicated, which would lead to the Sufi prayer ideal of divine union with God. Taken over from the Sufis, these gates presaged the 10 Sephirot of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life (Otz Chaim). Ibn Paquda based his representation of these 10 levels of closeness to God on the Sufi al-Makki's (d. 996 CE) Qut al-Qulub, the first comprehensive manual of Sufism.

Justin Jaron Lewis - Imagining Holiness, Classic Hasidic Tales in Modern Times

slika

Hasidic tales are often read as charming, timeless expressions of Jewish spirituality. The best-known versions of these stories, however, have been rewritten for audiences outside traditional Judaism and few works have explored Hasidic tales as they were created by Hasidic Jews. In "Imagining Holiness", Justin Lewis offers a radical reappraisal of how we think of Hasidic tales, calling into question received notions of authenticity. He focuses his study on the neglected Hasidic literature of the early twentieth century - primarily the work of Israel Berger and Abraham Hayim Michelson - and the literary and historical dynamics of its emergence, posing questions about its place in Hasidic society, the attitude of the Hasidim towards this literature, and orality in Hasidic tradition as manifested in these Hasidic books. Berger and Michelson wrote in the decade before the First World War, a time of loss and decline for Hasidism. Their books resisted modernity and positioned Hasidism as authentic Judaism but also reflected modern literary trends, expressed tensions within Hasidism itself, and depicted struggles between the soul and body. "Imagining Holiness" - a timely study, given the growing influence of Hasidism - will help readers understand the inner motivations of this religious culture at an important moment in its history.

Alan F. Segal - Two Powers in Heaven, Early Rabbinic Reports About Christianity and Gnosticism

slika

In this study of the rabbinic heretics who believed in "Two Powers in Heaven," Alan Segal explores some relationships between rabbinic Judaism, Merkabah mysticism, and early Christianity. "Two Powers in Heaven" was a very early category of heresy. It was one of the basic categories by which the rabbis perceived the new phenomenon of Christianity and one of the central issues over which Judaism and Christianity separated. Segal reconstructs the development of the heresy through prudent dating of the stages of the rabbinic traditions. The basic heresy involved interpreting scripture to say that a principal angelic or hypostatic manifestation in heaven was equivalent to God. The earliest heretics believed in two complementary powers in heaven, while later heretics believed in two opposing powers in heaven. Segal stresses the importance of perceiving the relevance of rabbinic material for solving traditional problems of New Testament and gnostic scholarship, and at the same time maintains the necessity of reading those literatures for dating rabbinic material.

Eknath Easwaran - Passage Meditation

slika

Pioneered by spiritual master Eknath Easwaran, passage meditation consists of memorizing an inspirational spiritual passage and then sending it deep into consciousness through slow, sustained attention. It keeps meditation fresh and varied because readers can select the passages -- from one tradition or many -- that embody their chosen ideals. Many readers also enjoy the passages for their poetic and intellectual appeal. This form of meditation offers all the richness and depth of traditional wisdom, together with a practical method for bringing that wisdom into daily life. The book situates passage meditation as part of Easwaran's eight-point program that, based on traditional spiritual practices but adjusted for modern lifestyles, shows readers how to stay calm and focused at work and home. This edition includes a new preface of previously unpublished material by Easwaran and an epilogue that explains the story behind the book and invites new readers to join the author on this adventure in the "world within."

Eknath Easwaran - Timeless Wisdom

slika

Timeless Wisdom is the companion volume to Eknath Easwaran’s Passage Meditation. Passage Meditation gives Easwaran’s instructions in his method of meditation; Timeless Wisdom is his accompanying collection of texts that are suitable for study and meditation. In this selection from the great spiritual traditions, Eknath Easwaran brings the world’s timeless wisdom within reach of the modern seeker. These passages include flashes of insight from the Hindu Upanishads, heartfelt prayers of the Christian saints, the passionate songs of the Sufis, and thoughtful teachings from the Jewish, Buddhist, and Taoist traditions. An authority on world mysticism, and outstanding translator of the Indian classics, Easwaran chooses texts that are positive, practical, and meaningful for readers today. This anthology is a compact version of Easwaran’s God Makes the Rivers to Flow, with a new preface and some new texts. This is a book to read and reread, each time drawing more from the well of inspiration in its pages.

Manly P. Hall - Wisdom of the Knowing Ones; Gnosticism, the Key to Esoteric Christianity

slika

This work examines the relationship of Gnostic mysticism to the inner teachings of Plato, Valentinus, Basilden, Bardaisan, and others; the spiritual glory of ancient Alexandria; and the Gnostic essence of the Christian message. The early Church attacked Gnosticism vigorously and relentlessly, recognizing these mystical philosophers as being the most formidable adversaries to the temporal power of Christian theology. Illustrated with reproductions of Gnostic artifacts.

Manly P. Hall founded the Philosophical Research Society, a non-profit organization in 1934, dedicated to the dissemination of useful knowledge in the fields of philosophy, comparative religion, and psychology. In his long career, spanning more than seventy years of dynamic public activity, Mr. Hall delivered over 7,500 lectures in the United States and abroad, authored over 150 books and essays, and wrote countless magazine articles.

A.D. Nuttall - The Alternative Trinity, Gnostic Heresy in Marlowe, Milton, and Blake

slika

The Trinity of orthodox Christianity is harmonious. The Trinity for Blake is, conspicuously, not a happy family: the Father and the Son do not get on. It might be thought that so cumbersome a notion is inconceivable before the rise of Romanticism but the Ophite Gnostics of the second century AD appear to have thought that God the Father was a jealous tyrant because he forbade Adam and Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge and that the serpent, who led the way to the Tree of Knowledge, was really Christ. This book explores the possibility of an underground "perennial heresy," linking the Ophites to Blake. The "alternative Trinity" is intermittently visible in Marlowe's Doctor Faustus and even in Milton's Paradise Lost. Blake's notorious detection of a pro-Satan anti-poem, latent in this "theologically patriarchal" epic is less capricious, better grounded historically and philosophically, than is commonly realized.

Matt Goldish - The Sabbatean Prophets

slika

In the mid-seventeenth century, Shabbatai Zvi, a rabbi from Izmir, claimed to be the Jewish messiah, and convinced a great many Jews to believe him. The movement surrounding this messianic pretender was enormous, and Shabbatai's mission seemed to be affirmed by the numerous supporting prophecies of believers. The story of Shabbatai and his prophets has mainly been explored by specialists in Jewish mysticism. Only a few scholars have placed this large-scale movement in its social and historical context.

Matt Goldish shifts the focus of Sabbatean studies from the theology of Lurianic Kabbalah to the widespread seventeenth-century belief in latter-day prophecy. The intense expectations of the messiah in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam form the necessary backdrop for understanding the success of Sabbateanism. The seventeenth century was a time of deep intellectual and political ferment as Europe moved into the modern era. The strains of the Jewish mysticism, Christian millenarianism, scientific innovation, and political transformation all contributed to the development of the Sabbatean movement.

By placing Sabbateanism in this broad cultural context, Goldish integrates this Jewish messianic movement into the early modern world, making its story accessible to scholars and students alike.

Mor Altshuler - The Messianic Secret of Hasidism

slika

This book describes a circle of Eastern European Kabbalists that established Hasidism, an important movement that has influenced Jewish Mysticism, Yiddish culture and Hebrew literature. It uncovers the messianic motivation, concealed in Hasidic writings after the failure of their 1740-1781 attempts to hurry redemption.

The book opens with the Besht, the legendary founder of Hasidism, and continues with the first Hasidic court, founded by one of his prominent disciples, the preacher of Zlotshov. The group's redemptive activities are revealed through their mystical rituals, their self-image as representatives of the ten Sefirot, and the status of their leader, "the Righteous One," as a vivid symbol of the divine influx.

The book is especially important for scholars and students of Judaism as well as scholars of mysticism and messianism, seeking to comprehend the transformation of an mesianic circle of devotees into a mass movement that changes the culture of an entire nation.

About the Author

Mor Altshuler, Ph.D. (1995) in Jewish Thought, the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, is a scholar of Jewish mysticism. She has published extensively on Hasidism and her current study on sixteenth-century Golden Age of Kabbalah is being published in academic forums, including Frankfurter Judaistische Beiträge. (2004).

Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan - The Bahir, Illumination

slika

The first book in any language to reveal the methodology of the ancient Kabbalists, this is one of the oldest and most import of all ancient Kabbalistic texts. a complete Hebrew text of THE BAHIR is included.

The Bahir is one of the most important of all classical Kabbalah texts. Until the revelation of the Zohar in 13th century Spain, the Bahir was one of the most influential and widely quoted primary source of Kabbalistic teachings. It is quoted in every major book of Kabbalah, the earliest being the Ravad's commentary on Sefer Yetzirah, and it is cited numerous times by the Ramban in his commentary on the Torah. It is also quoted in the Zohar. One of the most important concepts revealed in the Bahir is that of the Ten Sefirot. Also included is a discussion of reincarnation, an interpretation of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, the Thirty-two Paths of Wisdom, the twelve diagonal boundaries, and numbers that play a highly significant role in Kabbalistic study. Part One provides a modern translation of the text. Part Two is Aryeh Kaplan's commentary.

John F. Nash - From the Zohar to Safed, Development of Theoretical Kabbalah

Groundwork for the theoretical Kabbalah was laid in the 13th century by the monumental Sefer ha-Zohar, or “Book of Splendor.” But its full potential was realized 300 years later when an elite group of scholars gathered at Safed in Galilee. Moses Cordovero, Isaac Luria, Chaim Vital, and others codified the Zoharic teachings and built the elaborate system of theoretical, or “theosophical,” Kabbalah we recognize today. This article reviews the origins of the Zohar and the circumstances that led to the formation of the Safed community. It then proceeds to explore the development of major aspects of the theoretical Kabbalah over the 300-year period. Emphasis is placed on the Kabbalistic doctrine of divine emanation; the story of creation, fall and redemption; and teachings on ethics, the human soul, and spiritual progress. The article also notes that, despite patriarchal attitudes toward women, the Safed scholars articulated in some detail the qualities of the Divine Feminine.

John F. Nash - Origins of the Christian Kabbalah

This article explores the emergence of the Christian Kabbalah from its Judaic antecedents. The birth of that major feature of the western esoteric tradition was made possible by the confluence of traditions in the High Middle Ages and Renaissance when Jewish mystical texts and insights became available to Christian scholars. The Christian Kabbalah first appeared in Florence in the early 15th century and spread to Germany and the rest of Europe. It had obvious theological applications, but much interest also focused on discovering the timeless underpinnings of all world religions and on healing the breach among Christians, Jews and Muslims. The Christian Kabbalah was part of a more general investigation of occult traditions which included Hermeticism—a combination of astrology, alchemy and magic. Unfortunately, from the standpoint of the tradition’s purity, Hermeticism steered the Christian Kabbalah away from its intellectual and mystical roots toward a preoccupation with magic. Not surprisingly, ecclesiastical authorities became increasingly suspicious, although hostility was also motivated by prevailing anti-Semitism. In any event, the Christian Kabbalah—like its Judaic antecedent—never became a mass movement; it remained the pursuit of a small elite of scholars, aristocrats and churchmen.

John F. Nash - The Shekinah, the Indwelling Glory of God

Over the course of two millennia the Shekinah rose from an impersonal expression of God’s glory in the world almost to the status of a divine hypostasis. The Shekinah possibly had biblical roots but took definite form as a feminine aspect of God in the rabbinic period and gathered strength through the Middle Ages. The 16th-century scholars of Safed invested her with much theological and devotional importance. According to legend the Shekinah was betrothed to the Holy One but was exiled or lost in the wilderness. Her exile mirrored the Babylonian exile and the diaspora, but it also was seen as the result of human failings. In response, pious Jews—and perhaps by implication humanity as a whole—must find her, prepare the royal wedding feast, and present the adorned Shekinah to the waiting bride-groom. Meanwhile, the Shekinah served as a divine (but personalized) mother/daughter, a source of inspiration, and even a reminder of moral behavior. Clearly, the Shekinah was the product of a particular religious culture, but she remains vitally relevant to modern quests to understand the Divine Feminine and the immanence of God.

Moshe Idel - Hitbodedut, On Solitude in Jewish Mysticism

Solitude is a common component in many mystical techniques. It was intended to attain a state of separation from the ordinary life by premeditatedly avoiding the regular relationship with people and with ordinary matters which may distract the mystic from the process of concentration on his way to experience a closer relation to the divine. As such, the tendency to solitude is found among most of the classical forms of mysticism in major forms of religion, more eminently in Christianity, in Islam and in Hindu asceticism. In the earliest forms of Judaism, the status of this mystical practice is, however, much more precarious. In the Bible, major figures are portrayed as attaining important revelations or performing crucial religious deeds in moments or periods of solitude, as it is the case of the perceptions of Moses, Elijah, or the High Priest in the Holy of the Holies.

Robert Goodis - Kafka and Kabbalah

The ideas of Kabbalah, Talmud, and Tanakh, contradictory to existentialism for their philosophically Jewish nature, are prevalent throughout the text and subtext of Kafka’s writing. While his intent remains moot, these influences prove necessary to properly interpreting and understanding The Trial and lead readers to question whether Kafka intended to promote Jewish or existentialist philosophy and with which of the two he aligned himself. This essay shall prove, through evidence in religious context, that Franz Kafka wrote his literature not existentialistically but rather, with Jewish undertones. Based on common Jewish methods of education through literature and common Jewish symbolism, diction, and themes, Kafka’s unfinished novel, The Trial, shows an intrinsically didactic Jewish nature, even though he wrote the piece long before he began studying Jewish thought. Beliefs such as the futility of theurgy--futile for its ultimately isolating and corrupt pretenses--and the requirement of action and punishment play a large role in both the Jewish scriptures and Kafka’s writings. These philosophical details, along with other such Jewish concepts, run rampant throughout The Trial in both the indirect and direct forms—as exemplified by Kabbalah, Talmud, and Tanakh. While Kafka presents such strong Jewish influence in his writing, however, he also battles subtly the very philosophy to which critics most commonly attribute his works: existentialism. Kafka’s supposed moral ambiguity rather presents itself, through the Kabbalistic lens, as a social commentary on the effects of such ethical bankruptcy as the existentialist influence suggests. This uncommon perception of conceptually Kafkan traits not only implies Kafka’s literary genius, but also leads the educated reader to realize the true philosophical intensity and sheer intellect of the man.

Moshe Idel - Inner Peace through Inner Struggle in Abraham Abulafia's Ecstatic Kabbalah

The ecstatic kabbalist Abraham Abulafia created a detailed system according to which inner struggle is an important component of Judaism. He was especially interested in the issue of the killing of imagination and, as we will see in upcoming discussions, was concerned with Neoaristotelian noetics in which main combatants are imagination and the intellect. This agonic type of religiosity that is necessary in the beginning allows for the emergence of the next step in his mystical path, the harmonic one, in which the actualized and 'liberated' intellect is capable of cleaving to a supernal intellect capable of receiving prophecy.

Yechiel Shalom Goldberg - The Foolishness of the Wise and the Wisdom of Fools in Spanish Kabbalah

The talmid hakham, the student whose wisdom was learned from a sage and foundexpression through his knowledge of the Written and the Oral Torah, was the ideal persona of rabbinic Judaism. The title rabbi or rav—meaning “my master” or “master”—signified the institutional status of the talmid hakham and signified his role as the authority who possessed and transmitted the wisdom that God revealed to Israel through the prophets. This wisdom was primarily identified with the Written Torah but found its fullest elaboration in the Oral Torah. Some rabbis not only preserved and transmitted traditions regarding the observance of the commandments (halakhah) and other exoteric matters but were involved in the revelation, preservation, and transmission of secret knowledge regarding areas of legal, cosmological, and theological concern, as suggested in M. Hagigah 2:1. This mishnah contains injunctions that either limit or prohibit the transmission of certain types of knowledge derived through דרישה (investigation) and that prohibit most cosmogonic, cosmological, and eschatological speculation.

Pinchas Giller - Leadership and Charisma among Mizrahi Modern Kabbalists, In the Footsteps of Shar’abi- Contemporary Kabbalistic Prayer

The Jews of the Middle East and the Mediterranean basin have enjoyed many powerful leaders and theologians since the era of Maimonides, and the force of their leadership has taken many forms. Some have lead through argument and the force of their ideas, and some have lead through their charisma and the impenetrability of their religious personalities. The legacy of Maimonides’ teaching is evident in the rabbinical academies and in the interaction of Judaism with modernity. Yet other interpretations of Judaism characterize the Judaism of North Africa and the Middle East, and presently, none is more compelling than the mystical prayer ritual of the disciples of R. Shalom Shar’abi.

The role of the leader is also central to the mythos of Kabbalah. The classical movements of Kabbalah were circles gathered around a single charismatic figure. The hero of the Zohar, Shimon Bar Yohai, directed a circle of mystics. The members of the kabbalistic renaissance in the 16th century Galilee hill town of Zfat were similarly gathered around such charismatic figures as Yosef Karo, Moshe Cordovero and Isaac Luria. All of these figures commanded circles of students, circles in which membership was prized and exclusion dreaded. The eros of such leadership and movement also surrounds the original circles of Polish hasidism. Finally, the kabbalists who flourished in the Middle East in early modernity is similarly centered around the personality of a single kabbalist whose personality dominates the schools of Eastern Kabbalah to this day, the 18th century mystic Shalom Shar’abi.

Shar’abi’s form of meditative prayer is presently a living form of Kabbalah which is enjoying a renaissance, in spite of its exotic and obscure nature. In Jerusalem, Safed, New York and Los Angeles, Jewish mystics regularly pray in elevated states of high concentration and silence. As they complete the Jewish prayer rite, these mystics contemplate complex and abstruse linguistic formulae. These formulae, known as the kavvanot or “intentions,” are based on a complex set of associations, employing Divine Names, mystical symbols and complex vocalized mantras.

David Chaim Smith - The Kabbalistic Mirror of Genesis

slika

The Kabbalistic Mirror of Genesis is the first book of its kind. It rigourously re-examines the first three chapters of Genesis from a radical non-theistic position, completely removing the concept of a creator God. Despite the 'heretical' postion, the book utilizes a traditionally precise kabbalistic vocabulary and structure. Previous that have attempted to unpack the text invariably rely on theistic dogma and mythology. Smith's book is absolutely devoid of conventional religious 'truth', and probes the ultimate mysteries using epistemological and ontological questioning from gnostic realization. The Kabbalistic Mirror of Genesis was previously only available to a small group of Smith's students and close colleagues, but it is now apparent that this work is enormously important and had to be made available to a wider audience.

About the Author

David Chaim Smith was born in 1964 in New York City. His education and early career was as a visual artist throughout the 1980s. In 1990 he began an immersion into the Hermetic Qabalah, which included ritual work with several occult orders. In 1997 he abandoned visual art for dedication to mystical practice, from which came a unique blend of Chassidic mysticism and traditional Kabbalah with Hermeticism. This coalesced through working with the 13th century text 'The Fountain Of Wisdom', which he mapped out diagrammatically. The resulting symbol system served as the basis for his 2007 return to visual art. He currently lives in New York City with his wife Rachel.

Rachel Elior - Breaking the Boundaries of Time and Space in Kabbalistic Apocalypticism

The Jewish expulsion from Spain in 1492 uprooted and dispersed large numbers of Jews and left traumatic impressions on the following generations of the Jewish people throughout the course of the sixteenth century. Similarly, the expulsion engendered many queries into the religious significance surrounding the tragic event. The banishment was perceived neither as a mere historical incident nor as an arbitrary political decision of the secular powers. In other words, these events could not be compensated or accounted for within the stipulations of realistic-historical circumstance. The catastrophe was interpreted in religious terms as part of an all encompassing and predetermined apocalyptic process signifying the End of Days. Therefore, the Expulsion was perceived as an initial manifestation of approaching events.

Shaul Magid - Hasidism On The Margin

He contextualizes the Hasidism of Izbica-Radzin in the larger philosophy and history of religions and provides a model for inquiry into other forms of Hasidism."

Bakan challenges the commonly held view of Freud that he was a patently secular, rationally and scientifically-orientated intellectual, educated in modern culture and with only a modicum of formal Jewish education. He argues that Freud was influenced in his major and revolutionary life work by a mystical tradition that he seemed to know little about, and which, as a mysticism, would be antithetical to science.

Paul Oliver - Mysticism, A Guide for the Perplexed

slika

This is a guide to mysticism: one of the most enduring and fascinating aspects of religious life, and one of the most difficult to unpick. Mysticism is one of the most enduring and fascinating aspects of religious life, and one of the most difficult to unpick. It has, over the centuries, inspired many of the leading figures in different faiths to seek a sense of union with God or with the spiritual forces in the universe, and is increasingly part of the spiritual mainstream. Designed for students grappling with this complicated area, this will enable readers to understand the nature of mysticism, and to examine in detail the traditional methods used by mystics in seeking an intimate understanding of the spiritual world. Including a detailed survey of mystical trends within all the main world religions, and case studies of the lives of important mystics, "Mysticism: A Guide for the Perplexed" also examines the nature of the mystical lifestyle, and examines the extent to which ordinary people can develop a sense of personal mysticism. "Continuum's Guides for the Perplexed" are clear, concise and accessible introductions to thinkers, writers and subjects that students and readers can find especially challenging - or indeed downright bewildering. Concentrating specifically on what it is that makes the subject difficult to grasp, these books explain and explore key themes and ideas, guiding the reader towards a thorough understanding of demanding material.

Frank Graziano - Wounds of Love, The Mystical Marriage of Saint Rose of Lima

slika

The Peruvian mystic St. Rose of Lima (Isabel Flores y Oliva, 1586-1617) was canonized in 1671 as the first saint of the New World and remains the object of widespread devotion today. In this engrossing new study, Frank Graziano uses the example of St. Rose to explore the meaning of female mysticism and the way in which saints are products of their cultures.

Virginity, austerity, eucharistic devotion, incessant mortification, and mystical marriage to Christ characterized the devotional regimen that structured St. Rose's entire life. Many of her mystical practices echo the symptoms of such modern psychological disorders as masochism, depression, hysteria, and anorexia nervosa. Graziano offers a sophisticated argument not only for the origins and meaning of these behaviors in Rose's case, but also for the reason her culture venerated them as signs of sanctity. In the process he explores a wide range of themes, from the idea of suffering as an expression of love to the assimilation of childhood trauma through religious repetition.

Graziano also offers a penetrating analysis of the politics of Rose's canonization. He finds that her mystical union with God--bypassing the institutional channels of sacrament and priestly mediation--was inherently subversive to the bureaucratized Church. Canonization was a cooptation by which Rose's competing claim to Christ was integrated into the Catholic canon.

The book concludes with a fascinating exploration of mystical eroticism, with its intense experiences of vision and ecstasy. The eroticized suffering of many mystics is shown to be very human in origin: the mystic's wounded love is projected onto a God conceived to accommodate it.

Wounds of Love is based on a decade of research in archives, rare books, and an extraordinary range of secondary sources. Introducing an innovative method that integrates history, cultural studies, psychoanalysis, and clinical psychology, this compelling work offers a bold new interpretation of female mysticism.

Mateus Soares de Azevedo - Ye Shall Know the Truth, Christianity and the Perennial Philosophy

slika

This book aims at explaining, discussing, and developing in a new key, the spiritual, philosophical and artistic patrimony of the Christian tradition in its intellectually challenging dimension - as well as to consider its future possibilities. Behind the book lies the belief that one of the main factors responsible for the contemporary decadence, lack of vigor, and indeed the tragic crisis, of traditional religion is the indifference that is shown towards its sapiential or 'knowledge' dimension. The essays here envisage religion primarily as knowledge of a sacred character - not as 'social service' nor as a merely ethical system. The authors of the 'Perennial Philosophy' here support the vision that the intellective dimension is central to the human being; knowledge, profoundly understood, is the very heart of man.The decisive characteristic of this anthology is therefore that it deals primarily with the sapiential aspect of religion. The reader will not find in it anything that smacks of 'religious nationalism,' formalism without spirit, or expedients intended to appeal to anything less than the central intellectual faculty of man.

The Byzantine-Hesychast Essence/energies distinction is paralleled by

1. The traditional Reformed distinction of God as transcendent (and incomprehensible) in His essence and immanent in His power;
2. The orthodox Jewish Kabbalistic distinction of God (en-sof, the infinite) and the Sephiroth (Law spheres) or organic Torah and divine language, in which His creative power unfolds;
3. The Reformational Cosmonomic Philosophy of Herman Dooyeweerd as Christian Theosophy: God’s Self-revelation in the Word and the words;

Fr. Julio Penacoba - Listening to God in Prayer, the Habit of Daily Mental Prayer

This booklet is all about learning how to listen to God in prayer. When two persons meet and communicate, they both speak and listen to each other. Likewise, prayer is supposed to be a two-way communication with God where we speak and listen to God. It is easy to speak to God in prayer but not everybody is familiar with how to listen to Him. And yet, coming to think of it, listening to God is more important than speaking to Him. There is plenty of material about prayer. Much of it --beginning with the fourth section of the Catechism of the Catholic Church-- is very good and deep. I still decided to offer this booklet as a help to get people started with the habit of daily mental prayer or meditation. It has a practical approach. I simply attempted to put into writing the experience of countless ordinary people who have learned to do mental prayer guided by the secular spirituality of Saint Josemaria Escriva. The good news is that it works. There are literally hundreds of thousands of ordinary and busy people who practice daily mental prayer as a dialogue with God. They spend daily some time (somewhere between 15 minutes to one hour) talking and listening to God about their daily concerns (theirs and God's). During that time, they get things from God that influence the way they live, work and relate with others.

Sam Anthony Morello - Lectio Divina and the Practice of Teresian Prayer

To approach the subject of Teresian prayer (that is, prayer after the pattern of St. Teresa of Avila) we need a broad perspective. This is necessary, although perhaps surprising, because there is no distinctively Teresian way to pray. There is not even a uniquely Carmelite way to pray. Carmel’s spirituality is rooted in the greater tradition of lectio divina (literally, divine reading), a particular way of reading and praying over the Scriptures. This is why we read at the very heart of the Carmelite Rule of St. Albert: Each one of you is to stay in his own cell or nearby, pondering the Law of the Lord [i.e., sacred Scripture] day and night and keeping watch at his prayers unless attending to some other duty (Rule, no. 8). Pondering sacred Scripture was the way the early monks, the desert fathers and mothers, and in fact the people of the bible, prayed. And the monks developed a traditional method for doing that, the ingredients of which we find rehearsed in John of the Cross when he writes: Seek in reading and you will find in meditation; knock in prayer and it will be opened to you in contemplation (Sayings, #158). [1] We will see how those four elements of lectio perfectly serve Teresian prayer, or better said, how the Teresian approach to prayer serves lectio. But let us first examine some underlying Teresian notions and principles, looking at Teresa's methods and her preferred prayer orientation, as well as her understanding of the goals of prayer. All of these might be called Teresian attitudes, wonderfully helpful attitudes that enrich the monastic tradition of prayer and can broaden contemporary approaches to prayer.

William A. Meninger - The Committed Life, an Adaptation of The Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis de Sales

slika

A masterful updating of a classic work. St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622), bishop of Geneva and founder of the Visitation Order of nuns, was renowned for his teachings on spirituality. His masterpiece in the field of spiritual literature was "The Introduction to the Devout Life. Revolutionary in its day and noted for its charm, warmth, and clarity of language, it set forth a spirituality oriented toward life in the world, an approach quite different from that of St. Francis de Sales's contemporaries, who saw spiritual perfection as possible only in religious life. While the message of "The Introduction to Devout Life" is still valid today, the fact is that its expression is quite dated. In this book, as in "Bringing 'The Imitation of Christ' Into the 21st Cemtury, Father Meninger is not offering a new translation or paraphrase of a spiritual classic. Rather, he is attempting to express the teachings of the original in a wholly contemporary idiom. Father Meninger has not hesitated to change, omit, or add to the original where necessary, the better to highlight the heart and charisma of St. Francis de Sales's teachings.

Questions About Centering Prayer

Centering Prayer is one of the most wide-spread and laudable attempts today to introduce people to the life of prayer and dispose them for contemplative prayer. But it is precisely because Centering Prayer is doing such important work that we would like to address these open questions to the world-wide Centering Prayer community in a spirit of gentle inquiry with the hope that any dialogue that results will only strengthen this movement.

Alexander T. Pocceto - The Image of Jacob’s Ladder in the Writings of St. Francis de Sales

The metaphor of a spiritual ladder or stairway is deeply embedded in our human consciousness. For many cultures, religions and thinkers, this image conveys both the deep longing and striving for self-transcendence and a higher or more perfect form of human existence and blessedness. It connotes an innate desire to be part of or in communion with a higher power or person that is believed to be capable of bringing about this transformation by degrees or in a gradual manner. Thus the ancient Egyptians built one of their pyramids as an enormous stairway designed “to facilitate the ascension of the soul of the king toward his father Rê, the sun-god.” A similar idea is found in the ziggurats in the Assyrian-Babylonian culture. These were constructed with the purpose of assisting those mounting toward heaven by steps to encounter the divine being. Taoism in China described the various stages or steps required to come in contact with “the mysterious heaven.” Various Indian philosophies spoke of the different rungs on “the ladder of salvation” to achieve perfect happiness. We find the image of the ladder in Plato which, after various steps, leads to the contemplation of the Idea. Among Muslims, there is a legend that Mohammed ascended to heaven by means of a ladder, and the Islamic writer, Avincenna, wrote at length on the “mystical ascension.

The use of the imagery of the ladder is certainly not confined to ancient and pre-modern civilizations or to religious and philosophical contexts.

The object of this investigation is to examine how St.Francis de Sales (1567-1622), the Doctor of Love, utilizes the image of Jacob’s ladder to deepen and enrich our understanding of his spirituality and of our humanity.

Bishop Hilarion Alfeyev - Mystical Prayer in Isaac of Nineveh

The theme of prayer is undoubtedly the most frequently discussed and most thoroughly developed theme in St Isaac of Nineveh, an East Syrian ascetical writer of the seventh century. When reading his works, one not only receives a clear idea about how he and other members of the Church of the East prayed in his times: one also gains a detailed picture of the theory and practice of prayer in the whole of the Eastern Christian tradition. In this paper we shall outline the most characteristic features of Isaac’s doctrine of prayer, in particular, his teachings on different outward aspects of prayer; on the prayer before the Cross; on reading; on night vigil; on the prayer for one’s neighbour, the Church and the world; and on the highest mystical stages of prayer.

Rabbi David Aaron - Seeing God, Ten Life-Changing Lessons of the Kabbalah

slika

Seeing God by Rabbi David Aaron presents as its subtitle promises "Ten Life-Changing Lessons of the Kabbalah." Aaron, whose founding of the Isralight Institute in Jerusalem helped establish him as one of today's most popular spirituality gurus, writes in a crisp, clear style that offers eminently practical advice for those who wish to see God in their daily lives. The book's first chapter, "Getting Rid of God," does away with "the male, Zeus-like avenger floating about in heaven," which Aaron calls "a childish and counterproductive" concept. In place of "God," Aaron offers Hashem, a Hebrew term that means "the name," which stands for "Ultimate Reality Who embraces everything and fills everything"--a theological and lexical shift that emphasizes divine immanence in the world. Seeing God then elaborates 10 qualities of Hashem, derived from the Kabbalah, the ancient Jewish mystical text. Readers are encouraged to acknowledge and emulate these qualities, which range from Gevurah (kindness) to Malhut (communal consciousness). Each chapter concludes with "Seeing Exercises" and questions for contemplation ("Can you think of three things that you have done to bring justice into the world?"), whose purpose is to demonstrate that "Hashem is right here, right now, waiting to be seen, wanting to be known."

Joseph B. Lumpkin – The Books of Enoch, A Complete Volume

slika

The Books of Enoch: A Complete Volume Containing - 1 Enoch (The Ethiopic Book of Enoch), 2 Enoch (The Slavonic Secrets of Enoch), 3 Enoch (The Hebrew Book of Enoch).

For the first time, the major books making up the body of Enochian literature are presented to the public in a single volume. Joseph Lumpkin is the author of the best-selling work, "The Lost Book of Enoch." His work on both 1 Enoch and 2 Enoch have met with wide acceptance and plaudits. Now Lumpkin has completed his work on The Third Book of Enoch. 3 Enoch has not been available to the general public for over eighty years, until now. His previous releases of 1 Enoch and 2 Enoch are placed along side The Hebrew Book of Enoch (3 Enoch,) which has been translated using Hebrew source materials and contains "in-text" commentary. This volume contains copious notes and commentaries in all three books, designed to guide the reader through the difficulties of language, theology, and mystical references. It is a necessary resource for those engaged in the study of religion, religious history, or mysticism.

Yakov Shammai Azriel - The Quest for the Lost Princess in Rabbi Nachman of Braslav's Book of Stories from Ancient Times

One of the most innovative and original Hasidic leaders and thinkers, Rabbi Nachman of Braslav (1772 – 1810), related thirteen long, complex fables during the final four years of his life. This doctoral thesis presents an analysis of the quest for the Lost Princess in Rabbi Nachman of Braslav's "Book of Stories in Ancient Times." The image of the Lost Princess and the quest to find and rescue her, which appear in four of these stories (including the first and the last ones), are central symbols in Rabbi Nachman's thought. The most important key to an analysis of this image and theme lies in understanding the symbols and concepts of the Jewish mystical tradition (the Kabbalah), as Rabbi Nachman himself suggested.

Hamutal Bar-Yosef - Mysticism in Twentieth-Century Hebrew Literature

slika

Challenging the notion that Jewish mysticism ceased to exist in the Hassidic enclaves of early nineteenth century Europe, Hamutal Bar-Yosef delves into the mystical elements of 20th century Israeli literature. Exploring themes such as unity, death, and sex, Bar-Yosef traces the influence and the trends towards secular mysticism found in Russian, Yiddish, and early Hebrew writers, and examines the impact of Zionism in creating a modern, living mystical literature. An exciting new text for anyone studying modern Hebrew literature.

Moshe Tzvi HaLevi Berger, born in Transylvania in 1924, is a living embodiment of the strength of the human spirit. A Holocaust survivor, he went on to study art at both the Belle Arte in Rome and the Beaux Arts in Paris. His art has been showcased in over 100 one-man exhibitions across three continents. Mr. Berger has the distinction of being the first artist to exhibit his paintings at Jerusalem’s Western Wall.

In addition to being a master with the painter’s brush, Moshe Tzvi has been a serious student of Kabbalah for many years, probing the words of the ancient Kabbalists for enlightenment and inspiration. From 1988-2003, Moshe Tzvi first combined his artistic talents and Kabbalistic erudition in painting “The Psalms”, giving “visual voice” to each of the 150 Psalms – a series that granted the world visual access to the greatest work of spiritual poetry known to man.

Elliot R. Wolfson - Venturing Beyond, Law and Morality in Kabbalistic Mysticism

slika

Are mysticism and morality compatible or at odds with one another? If mystical experience embraces a form of non-dual consciousness, then in such a state of mind, the regulative dichotomy so basic to ethical discretion would seemingly be transcended and the very foundation for ethical decisions undermined. Venturing Beyond - Law and Morality in Kabbalistic Mysticism is an investigation of the relationship of the mystical and moral as it is expressed in the particular tradition of Jewish mysticism known as the Kabbalah. The particular themes discussed include the denigration of the non-Jew as the ontic other in kabbalistic anthropology and the eschatological crossing of that boundary anticipated in the instituition of religious conversion; the overcoming of the distinction between good and evil in the mystical experience of the underlying unity of all things; divine suffering and the ideal of spiritual poverty as the foundation for transmoral ethics and hypernomian lawfulness.

Nurbhai and Newton - George Eliot, Judaism And The Novels, Jewish Myth and Mysticism

slika

This is the first study to argue that Jewish Mysticism influenced not only her Jewish novel, Daniel Deronda, but all of George Eliot's novels. The reader is left with a very different George Eliot from that assumed by most previous criticism. Though previous studies have attempted to qualify the still-dominant view that Eliot is firmly a part of the realistic tradition, this study goes further by demonstrating that a cohesive mythic structure with its basis in Jewish mysticism is identifiable in her fiction.

Elliot R. Wolfson - Through a Speculum That Shines, Vision and Imagination in Medieval Jewish Mysticism

slika

A comprehensive treatment of visionary experience in some of the main texts of Jewish mysticism, this book reveals the overwhelmingly visual nature of religious experience in Jewish spirituality from antiquity through the late Middle Ages. Using phenomenological and critical historical tools, Wolfson examines Jewish mystical texts from late antiquity, pre-kabbalistic sources from the tenth to the twelfth centuries, and twelfth- and thirteenth-century kabbalistic literature. His work demonstrates that the sense of sight assumes an epistemic priority in these writings, reflecting and building upon those scriptural passages that affirm the visual nature of revelatory experience. Moreover, the author reveals an androcentric eroticism in the scopic mentality of Jewish mystics, which placed the externalized and representable form, the phallus, at the center of the visual encounter.

In the visionary experience, as Wolfson describes it, imagination serves a primary function, transmuting sensory data and rational concepts into symbols of those things beyond sense and reason. In this view, the experience of a vision is inseparable from the process of interpretation. Fundamentally challenging the conventional distinction between experience and exegesis, revelation and interpretation, Wolfson argues that for the mystics themselves, the study of texts occasioned a visual experience of the divine located in the imagination of the mystical interpreter. Thus he shows how Jewish mystics preserved the invisible transcendence of God without doing away with the visual dimension of belief.

Solomon Ibn Gabirol - The Improvement of the Moral Qualities, Tikkun Middot HaNefesh

slika

"The Improvement of the Moral Qualities" is an ethical treatise composed by Gabirol at Saragossa in 1045, at the request of some friends who wished to possess a book treating of the qualities of man and the methods of effecting their improvement. The work is highly original in two respects. He attempted to systematize the principles of ethics independently of religious dogma, emphasizing the correlation and interdependence of the physical and the psychical in ethical conduct. He also arranged the virtues and vices in relation to the physical senses; each sense becoming the instrument, not the agent, of two virtues and two corresponding vices.

Gabirol's ethical theses were based on the four humors. The qualities of the soul were made manifest through the senses; and these senses in turn were constituted of the four humors. Just as the humors could be modified one by the other, the senses could be controlled and the qualities of the soul be trained towards good or evil. In attributing the virtues to the senses, Gabriol made it clear that he was referring only to the five physical senses, not the "concealed" senses, such as perception and understanding, which are part of the nature of the soul. In order to cultivate his soul, man must know its peculiarities, study himself as he is, closely examine his character and inclination, habituate himself to the abandonment of whatever draws him into close contact with the physical and temporal, and aim at the spiritual and the abiding. This effort in itself is blessedness. A man's ability to make such an effort is proof of divine benevolence.

Abraham Abulafia - Meditations on the Divine Name

slika

"Would that all the Lord's people were prophets, that the Lord put His spirit upon them!"
-Moses, Numbers 11:29

"The method of pronouncing the Name is found in the book Light of the Intellect by Abraham Abulafia, and this method is the secret of Sefer Yesira"
-Moshe Cordovero, Or Yakar on Zohar, Song of Songs

"I began to fathom the gist of Abulafia's books and even attempted to perform a few of his instructions to the letter and experienced that they caused changes in my states of consciousness"
-Gershom Scholem, From Berlin to Jerusalem

Amidst the rich panoply of Jewish Kabbalah, Abraham Abulafia resonates the most with modern, philosophically minded seekers of direct mystical experience. Abulafia creatively combined Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed and the ancient Sefer Yesira into an integrated method of concentrating on the Divine Name that opens the path to fulfilling the soul's deepest spiritual longings. Intense practice of Abulafia's meditative techniques propels the attentive soul into a state of awakened receptivity where the active divine influence can reach down to meet and illuminate the human intellect.

Abulafia was unique amongst Jewish mystics in providing precise instructions for personal spiritual practice. I have translated meditations from three of Abulafia's major mystical handbooks "that reveal the true knowledge of the Divine Name" as he puts it. These particular texts achieved a wide underground circulation amongst Jewish mystic elites despite a severe rabbinical ban on Abulafia promulgated by Shlomo ben Adret.
