Light Fantastic explores the phenomenon that surrounds and affects nearly every aspect of our lives but one which we take for granted - light. Reader in History and Philosophy of Science at Cambridge, Simon Schaffer presents the four-part series, Light Fantastic.

BBC Four: How did you originally get involved with Light Fantastic?
Simon Schaffer: Annabel Gillings, one of the programme producers, contacted me about a series on light. I think the original idea was for a science-based series using optics, vision and so on to communicate interesting discoveries in physics and chemistry and how light works. I thought this approach would be mistaken, as it judged past events as either good or bad, depending on whether they delivered us to where we are now. She was interested in my approach so we met up and worked out ways of dividing up the whole history of optics into four hours!

BBC Four: How is Light Fantastic different from a straight science-based documentary?
SS: Unlike some public science writing and broadcasting which explains the roots of where we are now, this series is about understanding the roots of where we were. In other words, the past of the sciences is presented on its own terms, showing the significance of forces like theology, culture and economic development on the development of ideas. To imagine there have always been scientists is very misleading. Before the 19th Century no one calls themselves a scientist, they don't cut up the world like that. I look at the preoccupations of the clergymen, medics, industrialists, engineers and professors responsible for the breakthroughs. Take Newton: you can't understand what he is doing in the 1660s, experimenting with prisms and sunlight, unless you realise he is obsessed by the problems of religion and God. Light interests him because it's the principle of divinity, or how creation happens. Realising the meaning of those experiments to Newton, in theological terms, demonstrates just how different the intellectual environment was to our current one.

I think the programmes challenge the 'conflict thesis': the idea that the progress of science has always been contested by established religion. Almost all the people I mention in the series are creationists. Galileo was a believer. He wanted the church to agree that the Earth goes round the Sun because he didn't want the church to be wrong!

Part 1: Let There be Light


Greek and Arab scholars, and later Europeans such as Descartes and Newton all tried to understand light to gain a better understanding of God. Episode one shows how much of modern science's origins came from the desire to penetrate the divine nature of light.

Part 2: The Light of Reason

The second programme explores the link between the development of practical tools that manipulate light and the emergence of new ideas. For example, Galileo's observation that the sun did not go around the earth, was made with a telescope that had been invented for Venetian soldiers and traders

Part 3: The Stuff of Light

Episode three charts the discovery of the true nature of light and its impact on the modern world. All of today's technologies - electricity, mobile communications and our ability to illuminate the world 24 hours a day - stem from unravelling the mystery of light.

Part 4: Light, The Universe and Everything

In the final programme Simon Schaffer finds that as more people were able to manipulate light, the more puzzling and tricky it became. This led to investigations into the strange relationship between light, the eye and the mind, and the development of new technology such as photography and cinema.

This is the story of two genuine scientific heroes. For forty years, John Bahcall and Ray Davis were engaged in a single extraordinary experiment - to find out why the Sun shines. The Human Body



The Human Body documentary is the sort of televisual undertaking that continues to justify the BBC licence fee. Presented by Robert Winston, it takes us on a journey from birth to death using time-lapse photography, computer graphics and various state-of-the-art imaging techniques to explore every aspect, every nook and crevice of the human body in its various stages of growth, maturity and eventual decay. Conception, toddlerhood, the awkward growing pains of adolescence, the incredibly complex workings of the brain (which burns up more energy than any other part of the human body, viewers of daytime TV included, apparently) and finally death are vividly depicted and explained. Winston's lucid, avuncular tones make The Human Body accessible to an intelligent 10-year-old and ages upward, though the more squeamish viewer might baulk at scenes of food being digested, or childbirth in all its inevitable messiness. Statistics abound--the average human will eat for three-and-a-half years during his or her lifetime, eat 160kg of chocolate and spend six months on the toilet. Though heart-warming in that it shows the commonality of human experience, The Human Body is also a potentially depressing reminder of our frail physicality and mortality. However, the most moving programme here features Herbie, a cancer victim who, in agreeing to have his last moments filmed as he lies dying in a hospice, has perhaps achieved a deserved immortality through this programme.

HORIZON 2000 Supermassive Black Holes

In June 2000, astronomers made an extraordinary discovery. One that promises to solve one of the biggest problems in cosmology - how and why galaxies are created. Incredibly, the answer involves the most weird, destructive and terrifying objects in the Universe - supermassive black holes. Scientists are beginning to believe that these forces of pure destruction actually help trigger the birth of galaxies and therefore are at the heart of the creation of stars, planets and all life.

Supermassive black holes are so extraordinary that until recently, many people doubted that they existed at all. The idea of giant black holes the size of the Solar System seemed more like science fiction that reality - such monsters would be so powerful that they could destroy the very fabric of the Universe. But in the last five years a series of discoveries has changed our understanding of supermassive black holes and galaxies forever.

Using the powerful Hubble Space Telescope, scientists have been scanning nearby galaxies, searching for these giant black holes. It's a difficult job - by their very nature black holes swallow light - so can never be seen. So what scientists have been looking for is the effect of their massive gravity, hurling stars around them at immense speed. What they've found is more extraordinary than anyone could ever have imagined; not just evidence that these vast destructive monsters exist¦ but so far they're in every single galaxy toward which they have turned their telescopes. These giant agents of destruction appear to be common throughout the Universe. Scientists now think supermassive black holes are a fundamental part of what a galaxy actually is.

Lurking at the heart of every single galaxy is a giant black hole of apocalyptic proportions - and that includes our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Astronomer Andrea Ghez has been studying the heart of the Milky Way for the last five years. What she\'s discovered is irrefutable evidence for a giant black hole, 3 billion times the size of our own sun. A black hole that could destroy the entire Solar System. And as Horizon was filming in July 2000, Ghez got some terrifying images - of the giant monster sucking up gas and stars at the galaxy heart.

So what is this giant monster doing at the heart of our galaxy? What effect will this giant black hole 25,000 light years away have on us and the rest of the galaxy around it? These are questions that have been puzzling astronomers for the last few years - and in June, two separate groups of scientists found evidence that points to a startling answer. Rather than being destructive parasites, it seems that supermassive black holes may be essential in the very creation of the galaxies they live in.

Exactly how our galaxy was created has mystified astronomers and physicists for years. Although there have been many theories, there's little evidence to explain how the gas in the early Universe condensed to form the galaxy we see today. Now scientists realise they've been missing a vital ingredient - a supermassive black hole. The immense gravity of a giant black hole might trigger the gas to collapse in the first place. By churning up the gas around it, a giant black hole would trigger the birth of stars, planets and life itself. Despite being the most destructive thing in the Universe, scientists now think our supermassive black hole could be crucial in creating the galaxy as we know it.

The supermassive black hole in our own galaxy may be the reason we exist, but recent work suggests it may also be our end. At present Earth is so far away from the black hole that it can't affect us, but physicist John Dubinski thinks all that could change. In January 2000 he graphically simulated the final fate of our galaxy. In 3 billion years we will collide with the next door galaxy, Andromeda. The resulting apocalypse will force the Earth and our Solar System out of orbit. Dubinski has calculated a worrying 50:50 chance that we'll be sent hurtling in towards the black hole at the centre of this maelstrom. This would be fatal for the Earth.

Space Odyssey - Voyage to the Planets



For anyone who missed the BBC's dramatised three-hour tour of our solar system when it was screened by the ABC earlier this year, the price of this DVD is a modest levy indeed for a small slice of television history.

The two-part presentation travels with the crew of the Pegasus to Venus and Mars, through the Sun's outer atmosphere and the asteroid belt to the gas giants and beyond.

We join the multinational crew sometime in the relatively near future as they enter the final stages of their training to spend six years aboard their 1.3km-long craft. The first port of call, 41 days into the voyage, is Venus and here the human drama begins. As well as taking soil samples and positioning transmitters, the crew is expected to investigate the fate of an old Russian probe. Their lander, Orpheus, touches down barely 200 metres from the craft, but almost from the moment the crew member leaves the lander to investigate the remains, he is in trouble. Simulations on Earth have seriously underestimated the difficulty of walking even short distances in the thick, high-pressure Venusian atmosphere, and the 400m round-trip to the old spacecraft seems impossible. Meanwhile, the corrosive gases swirling around the surface of the planet begin to damage their equipment.

And so it goes on. Each port of call has its breathtaking scenery and its problems - storms on Mars, a hair-raising run through the asteroid belt, uncomfortable passages through the Sun's outer atmosphere and the rings of Saturn.

This is great fun and about as plausible as we have any right to expect, given that our sophistry in depicting alien climes on screen far exceeds our ability to reach them.

It's also low-key. There's no George Washington standing in the prow of the ship, his chin thrust forward, as it crosses the Delaware; no James T.

Kirk boldly splitting infinitives where no man has gone before.

In other words, the tone never threatens to dominate the subject matter. The user's guidebook to the solar system is not yet written but, until it is, this will do very nicely.

Eh, pa obično upload ide od nekih drugih ljudi, sa raznoraznih drugih foruma, pa samo prenesem linkove... a probat ću naći i Curtisa, a ako ima - stavim.
