Experiencers (2008)
If you are one of those people prone to making lists of things to do before you die, this program might offer an hour of provocation. High on such lists for anyone with a flitter of imagination is to be abducted by aliens and whisked off into space for an intimate examination involving coloured lights, strange sensations and rectal probing. A great many individuals claim to have experienced such events - most of them in America, which begs the question: are the aliens getting a decent picture of the human condition or should they widen their demographic to include other human sub-species?
Professor John Mack was a professor of psychiatry at Harvard University (a notorious hotbed of intrigue, aberrant behaviour and fantastic speculation) who examined hundreds of people claiming to have been kidnapped and studied by cosmic entities. His conclusion from their testimony was that they were telling the truth. Or, more precisely, that they were sincere people of sound mind and extremely disturbed by their experiences. Mack termed these subjects "Experiencers" and speculated why, despite never having met one another, their independent descriptions of both their abductors and the events that befell them were remarkably similar. Identical sequences of paralysis, memory loss and, of course, the insertion of deep rectal probes. A grain of salt and a bent spoon might prove useful accoutrements as this intriguing doco plays out.
